Tips to get rid of sunken eyes by Dr Meenu Sethi

Sunken eyes a.k.a hollow eyes can appear due to aging, exhaustion, lack of sleep, dehydration, stress and improper diet. The first stage of unhealthy eyes is the pesky dark circles and when they are not treated on time, sunken eyes make their way into your life. They are indeed a real downer and are caused by the loss of orbital fat in the lower eyelids. These hollow eyes look extremely unhealthy and can make you look exhausted, even when you are not. They can appear regardless your age, race, and gender. Most people opt for medical remedies, but there are many home remedies as well that can help you improve your condition. They are very light to your pocket, super effective, not time-consuming and of course, there are no side-effects.

Things you need to do to get rid of the sunken eyes:

• Proper Sleep

An adequate amount of sleep is not just important to get rid of sunken eyes, but also to stay away from a myriad of lifestyle diseases. So, it is recommended to sleep at least 7-8 hours every day. Besides, taking a nap about 20-30 minutes during the day would be a plus. Use two pillows to avoid fluid build up and sleep on your back to avoid constricting blood vessels in your face.

• Water

You need to drink at least 2 liters of water every day, without fail. Water helps remove toxins from the system and hence reduce the amount of salt concentration in and around the eye area. If you find drinking plain old water boring, you can jazz it up. Just add a few mint leaves or lemon slices or some cut fruits and Voila! Your flavored water is ready.

• Lifestyle Changes

Smoking cigarettes, excess alcohol, too much caffeine must be avoided. When you smoke, the carbon monoxide from cigarettes replaces the oxygen present in your skin and nicotine reduces the blood flow, which in turn will make your skin dry and uneven. It also drains the many necessary nutrients out of your body, Vitamin C is one of them, which helps in the formation of collagen.

• Healthy Diet

A healthy diet is crucial for a radiant skin and to get rid of sunken eyes completely.

• Avoid too much sugar or salt in your food.

• Say NO to junk food and opt to eat more seasonal fruits and vegetables that are fresh.

• Include food that has more water content in them.

• Start your day with a glass of lemon water.

• Use olive oil instead of your regular vegetable oil.

• Include tomatoes, oats, kale, walnuts, black beans, kiwis, green leafy vegetables in your meals.

• Drink green tea.

• If you must drink, then opt for red wine.

• Avoid aerated drinks.

• Eat food which contains Vitamin K.

• Always apply sunscreen, no matter the season or the weather.

• Wear sunglasses which gives you UV protection.

• Almond oil

Almond oil contains Vitamin E which provides required nourishment to your skin and helps you get rid of those sunken eyes. Before going to bed, massage a few drops of the oil on your eyelids and let it sit overnight. Do this for at least a month.

• Capsules

Vitamin E capsules or Fish oil capsules are an excellent treatment for sunken eyes. Why? Well, Vitamin E capsules are self-explanatory and fish oil contains omega fatty acids which are anti-inflammatory and promote healing of the damaged cells. Before hitting the bed, just clip off the tip of these capsules and apply the liquid to your eyelids. Let it sit overnight and wash it off in the morning. Do this for a month to get desired results.

• Sandalwood

Sandalwood has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties in it. It is exceptionally good for your skin and a great remedy for hollow eyes. Take one tablespoon of sandalwood powder and mix it with some rosewater to make a paste. Cleanse your face and apply it on your eyelids. Wash it off after 15 minutes. Do this twice a week and you will notice a vast difference after the first try only.

• Cold Compress

Cold compress constricts blood vessels and helps combat dark circles and eye bags. Soak a clean washcloth in milk or cold water for 4-5 minutes and apply to the affected area. Do this for 10 minutes every morning.
